I am an Associate Professor at the School of Information at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
My recent work has been on the use of social media in mainstream politics, on the flow and networks of misinformation online. I started the Social Media and Society group at Microsoft Research, and also started and organized the Social Media and Society in India symposium at Michigan.
I am a faculty affiliate at the Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing, at the Michigan Institute for Data and Artificial Intelligence in Society, and at the Center for South Asian Studies. Prior to rejoining the University of Michigan, I was a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, where I was part of the Technology for Emerging Markets group.
I’ve been a visiting scholar at the Research for Advanced Science and Technology at University of Tokyo, at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law at Stanford University, at Saarland University, at Department of Computer Science, Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México, and with the Natural Language Processing group at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi.
I am not currently admitting new graduate students for the academic year beginning Fall 2025.
